Community work
In 1988, the Government introduced a new Wildlife Policy in response to the declining wildlife population. The policy acknowledged the importance of allowing people living outside protected areas to benefit from their wildlife resources, as this would incentivize them to protect them. However, even after more than 20 years, significant obstacles still hinder the fair distribution of tourism earnings, which jeopardizes the entire concept of Community Based Tourism as a transformative force in wildlife conservation. Hoopoe and many other organizations have had to adapt to an unpredictable legal and business landscape, but we remain committed to operating beyond national parks and overcoming the challenges we encounter.
Kirurumu takes the lead in community collaboration initiatives, actively involved in constructing schools and clinics for the neighboring local communities. Together, we forge a stronger bond and make a positive impact.
What do we do?
Direct support
We share our water to the communities around the lodges in Tarangire (Maasai community) and Manyara (Iraqw community).
Working together
Our camp and lodge staff are mostly employed by the surrounding local people. In Serengeti mobile camps we employ local people from different places in Tanzania but also from surrounding communities.
Projects
We support sustainable development projects in different areas to improve the quality of life of the communities:
- Iraq Community Health Project
Activities with communities
Our commitment to tourism is to deliver transformative experiences for both our clients and our partners. We tailor-make our safaris to suit individual wishes using our long and practical and up to date information with optional project visits to gain insights on how we work with communities on the ground:
- Maasai community, Tarangire
- Iraqw community, Lake Manyara
- Chaga tribe, Materuni, Moshi
